Yesterday, amidst the whirlwind of my daily routine as an eLearning Instructional Designer, a serendipitous moment occurred. I stumbled upon a job posting that seemed almost tailor-made for someone with my background and expertise. The title, “Seeking Business Trainers to Elevate Job Role Performance – $250 Budget, 1 Month Project Duration (Malta),” sparked an immediate interest. Here’s how it all unfolded.
“In the realm of eLearning and training, every opportunity to enhance job role performance is a portal to transformative experiences, not just for the trainees but for the trainers themselves.”

The job posting in question sought experienced trainers with a knack for business training, aiming to support Service Provider Agencies (SPAs) in uplifting their job role competency and outcomes. What made this opportunity stand out was the emphasis on delivering comprehensive training programs within a tight timeframe – a challenge I have faced and conquered in the past.
Why specifically does this job post interest me, as a tenured eLearning Designer? The unique nature of the challenge it presented was too enticing to pass up. The prospect of working to elevate job role performance beyond the conventional framework of designing and delivering training modules, and doing so in a context as culturally rich and diverse as Malta, was intriguing. The fixed budget and project duration suggested a fast-paced, intensive work commitment, which, based on my past experiences, I knew I could handle.
Reflecting on a similar project I undertook last year for a tech firm in Singapore brought back a rush of adrenaline. It was a demanding project, but the satisfaction of seeing the direct impact of my work on the team’s performance was unforgettable. This job post promised a similar thrill and fulfillment.
As I reminisced about the successful conclusion of that project, the reality of the current opportunity began to set in. Despite the excitement, a critical analysis was necessary. The job posting called for trainers to deliver top-notch training, develop educational materials, and ensure performance improvement within SPAs. These were responsibilities I was ready and willing to take on, yet the budget and the agency-specific requirement posed significant limitations.
Job Posting Analysis
After a detailed review, it became clear that the job, while appealing, did not align with my current professional goals. The budget, in particular, was not compatible with the level of effort and expertise required for such a project.
Graceful Declination
In my reply to the hiring manager, I aimed to convey my appreciation for the opportunity while respectfully declining.
“Dear Hiring Manager, Thank you for your effort in crafting such a detailed job post. It’s evident that you’re looking for a dynamic trainer to make a meaningful impact. While I am honored by the prospect, the project’s scope, budget, and requirement for agencies do not align with my individual consulting practice. I believe in delivering the utmost value to my clients, and unfortunately, under these parameters, I wouldn’t be able to meet my own standards of quality. I hope you find the ideal candidate for your needs and wish you success in your endeavors. Warm regards, [Your Name]”
While it was a difficult decision, recognizing when to pursue an opportunity and when to step back is crucial in maintaining professional integrity and ensuring that the work I deliver is always of the highest quality.
